Skincare Routine

Korean skincare guide

In the last couple of years I have seen more beauty stores selling Korean skincare products. Korean skincare has many steps, it can be overwhelming if you don’t know which products to use and in which order.  I put together a list in the order of usage and types of products so hopefully this will help.

Korean skincare is all about layering. Applying the lightest product first followed by heavier products to build the layer of hydration. Yes even acne prone skin needs moisture because stripping away your natural oil will cause the skin to produce more oil.

Let’s begin – Here is a list of steps followed by type of products within each step.

If you wear makeup you need to do a double cleansing; first remove all your makeup follow by a cleanser.

  1. Removing makeup (face, eyes and lips) at night keeps your pores clean and it reduces the chance of clogged pores and eye infections.
    1. Cleansing oil
    2. Cleansing balms
    3. Cleansing water
    4. Face wipes
  1. Cleansing the skin to me is the most important step. Wash your face twice a day to remove dirt, oil, and bacteria; just because you think your skin is clean it doesn’t mean it is.
    1. Bar soaps
    2. Foam cleansers
    3. Non-foaming cleansers
    4. Clay cleansers
    5. Soap free cleansers
  1. Toner (lotion/refresher/ softeners) neutralizes the skin to its normal state of a 5.5 PH level, while preparing the skin to absorb all the good stuff that follows.
  1. Eye cream helps add moisture and stimulates cell renewal to the delicate eye area . Apply eye cream after toner to create a barrier from heavy face creams.
  1. Essence adds an extra boost of moisture that helps to reduce fine lines and targets uneven skin. It comes in gel or liquid form.
  1. Serum / Ampoule/ boosters are a concentrated lotion that penetrates active ingredients deep into the skin. The ingredient goes deeper than moisturizers. It’s the super food of skincare. But serums should not replace your daily lotion or moisturizers.
  1. Daily Moisturizer hydrates the skin, helps the skin retain moisture, and keeps it smooth. Moisturizers are generally used in the morning.
  1. SPF is a must If you plan on going out.
  1. Night creams is like moistures but with a thicker texture. When you sleep at night, the thick ream helps hydrate and repair the skin. The thicker texture will help it add more of a boost.

What’s your skincare routine?

  1. Thanks for the information! Recently my skincare routine has grown to include everything you mentioned, except for the double cleanse and the essence. Do you know whether it’s totally necessary to use another cleanser after using a cleansing oil? And about face oils in general, (I usually use one instead of a night cream) where do you think that would be included in this sort of skincare routine?

    1. I would recommend using a 2nd cleanser to remove any residue left behind from the cleansing oil. The 2nd cleanser freshens the skin while creating a clean slate for the next product.

From my own experience, essence has even out some of the discoloration on my face. I have been using the “face shop core seed purifying essence” for the last few months (the one shown in item #5 of my post) and it has lighten out my skin complexion.

Facial oil would replace the use of a night cream. You can also mix a few drops of the oil with your night cream to help give it an extra layer hydration.

If you have any other questions please feel free to ask.
